Flower Care 101: How to Care for Your Flowers like a Pro

| Wendy Han

Ever wondered how professional florists in Singapore keep their stalks fresh and blooming?

Let’s face it – while flowers can effortlessly brighten anyone’s day, nothing is more disheartening than watching them wilt in a couple of days. That’s not because flowers don’t last - but rather, you probably aren’t taking care of them properly.

In this article, we’ll reveal 4 secret tips to make your flowers last a lot longer. Read on to learn more and try them out yourself!

1. Select a Vase of the Appropriate Height

The primary function of a vase is to support your flowers, so having the one right is vital to their proper upkeep The vase should cover at least 2/3 of the flower stem, it can be more, but ideally no less as the stems will not be able to keep themselves sufficiently upright, and the strain will just damage the stems. As long as your vase is the right size to be able to support the flowers and hold enough water then you can choose any style you want. However, it is best to avoid metal or plastic vases. Instead, try to go for porcelain or glass vases.

2. Manage Exposure to Light

Manage Exposure to Light

The amount of sunlight that your flowers need depends on the types of flowers you have. Not all flowers need as much sunlight as others and assuming that all flowers can be put on the windowsill to soak up the sun all day will definitely do more harm than good. For example, lilies and roses blossom best when they are put into direct sunlight, however, flowers such as hydrangeas will flourish in a shaded corner of your house.

If you are unsure, you can ask the florist how much sunlight your new flowers will require. After all, they are probably going to be a lot more knowledgeable than an average person.

Generally, there are three options - direct sunlight, indirect sunlight, or partial shade. However, bear in mind that an intense heat will only soak up the water and dry out the flowers, so even with plants that need direct sunlight, it shouldn't be for more than about 6 hours a day.

3. Change the Water Daily

Since bacteria builds up in the water very quickly, it is essential that you change the water every day. Not only will the bacteria kill the flowers quite swiftly, but the water will also end up smelling rather putrid.

Therefore, daily water changes ensure that your flowers stay bright, radiant, and smelling fresh for as long as possible. Room temperature water is ideal for most flowers, however, do some research beforehand in case this is different for the type of flowers you have.

4. Cut Their Stems

Cut Their Stems

In order to allow the flowers to absorb as much water as possible, you should cut the stem of each one. You should remove around one inch from the stems, or if the stem is damaged or browning, then you should cut as much as you need to remove this.

Make the cuts at a slight angle, and only use a sharp knife or cutting shear, if you use a blunt object you will crush the end of the stem, and stop it from taking in as much water as it needs. During this process, you should also remove any dead leaves from the stem, but be gentle when you do; if you yank the leaves off you could end up causing damage to the stem or flower buds around them.

As the stems get shorter, swap your large vases for smaller ones.
