Festive Gathering: Tips for Hosting a Christmas Party

| Wendy Han

For many of us, the Christmas season in Singapore is the perfect time to reconnect with family and friends amidst a busy year. With the global pandemic causing a lot of emotional and mental stress, making time for your loved ones during this period is important in helping you recharge your batteries, and also helps you remember why you work so hard in the first place.

However, mingling with loved ones can also bring about a level of stress, especially for the chief party planner. “How much food should we prepare?”, and “what kinds of decor should we put up?”, may be some of the many questions racing through your mind. If you’re struggling to plan the perfect Christmas party, take a look below for some helpful tips!

How to plan the best reunion

Planning a party isn’t always a walk in the park, and there are many things you need to consider beforehand to ensure perfection from start to finish.

1. Be a great host

A great party starts with being an excellent host, and planning ahead goes a long way in doing that. Simple things such as calling your guests beforehand to confirm their attendance, having a planned itinerary, and organising the logistics ahead of time helps you to clear your tasks efficiently and effectively.

Additionally, don’t be afraid to delegate tasks. Tapping on your family or friends to help get things done not only reduces your workload, but also helps to build trust amongst your relationships. You can start by creating a checklist of the things that you need to get done, then assigning someone to each task.

2. Choose a theme

While having a theme isn’t always compulsory, having one can do wonders for the planning and execution of your event. Not only does it help to tie all the elements of your party together, but it also makes it much easier for you to plan compared to a generic theme.

For example, if the theme is “floral”, having various types of floral-related napkins, plates, decor and dress code helps to set a unified tone for the night. This helps you to focus on only one concept rather than a generic range of decorations, which can often be a headache.

3. Decide on the food menu

Having a good menu will take your party from good to great. Before deciding on what kinds of items to serve, first make sure you’ve taken note of your guest’s dietary requirements like allergies or restrictions. If there’s a theme involved, it would be best to tie your menu together with it (i.e. Christmas party = Christmas food).

If you’re struggling to measure portion sizes, remember that one adult eats roughly one pound of food while children eat half a pound. The more options you have, the fewer portions you need, so try having an array of carbohydrates, protein and vegetables for your guests too.

4. Set the right atmosphere

The perfect atmosphere sets the tone for the entire evening. Some simple ways to get that festive feeling going includes having the right playlist, or even having an elegant centerpiece like a bouquet of flowers

Aside from that, you can also have fun games like Secret Santa to really bring out the festive cheer amongst everyone. Be sure to let them know beforehand though, so that no one ends up without a present!
