What To Wear To Your Graduation Ceremony

Both NUS and NTU require all graduates to wear the academic dress. Getting this right matters. Graduates not meeting the dress code may be turned away from the ceremony.

The Academic Gown (Mandatory for all graduates)

  • Graduates can rent or purchase their gown from the official vendor for NTU, Serangoon Broadway located at 1365 Serangoon Road, Singapore 328244.
  • The academic gown should only have the accompanying graduation hood affixed to it. No other clothing may be layered over the gown, and no decorations or messages are permitted.
  • Order and collect your gown early, as preferred slots fill up fast.

For Male Graduates

  • Long-sleeved collared shirt, well-ironed (visible at collar and cuffs under your gown).
  • Long pants in smart neutral tones (Navy blue, black, charcoal, or grey).
  • Closed-toe formal shoes. No sneakers or sandals.
  • Tie is optional but recommended for a polished look.
  • Stick to neutral colours that work well under your academic gown in photos.

For Female Graduates

  • Smart blouse or long-sleeved collared shirt with long pants or a knee-length skirt, OR a knee-length dress.
  • Covered formal shoes. Only wear heels as high as you can comfortably walk in on stage.
  • Light, breathable fabrics are recommended. Ceremony halls can get warm in July and August.
  • White and ivory dresses are a popular choice for graduation photos, but any polished, solid-coloured outfit works.
  • Consider whether your outfit colour complements or contrasts your gown, both work well in different ways.

For Guests & Family Members

  • Smart casual to semi-formal works. Neat blouses, collared shirts, dress pants, or midi dresses.
  • Avoid overly casual attire such as t-shirts, shorts, or flip-flops.
  • Dress for Singapore's July heat: lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal.
  • Comfortable footwear matters; you may be standing a lot or walking across the campus for food and pictures.

More Graduation Tips For Your Graduation Ceremony

  • Tip 1: Arrive at least 45 minutes early. Parking at both NUS and NTU fills up fast on ceremony days. Factor in time for gown collection, seating, and finding your family.
  • Tip 2: Plan your photo spots in advance. Popular spots like the NUS arch and NTU main entrance get very crowded. Go before or after peak ceremony times for better shots.
  • Tip 3: Book your celebration meal early. Restaurants near NUS (Holland Village, Clementi) and NTU Jurong East fill up fast on ceremony days. Reserve in advance.
  • Tip 4: Prepare for the stage moment. You'll shake hands, accept your scroll, and smile for the photographer all in about 10 seconds. Know which hand gets the scroll beforehand.
  • Tip 5: Charge all devices the night before. Your phone, camera, and portable charger should all be fully charged. You will take more photos than you expect.
  • Tip 6: Pre-order your flower bouquets. Floristique offers same-day delivery, but peak graduation weeks see high demand. Pre-ordering your graduation bouquet ensures you get the arrangement you want.
  • Tip 7: Savour the moment. Graduation day goes by incredibly fast. Take time to be present. Put your phone down occasionally and just enjoy being celebrated by the people you love.
