Extend the Olive Branch this Christmas Season 2020

| Wendy Han

The holidays can be a stressful time for many, but they can be even more stressful when you have to walk on eggshells for fear of upsetting a family member or friend, holding on to resentment, or even opting to pick and choose holiday events to attend in attempts to avoid someone.

You may be of the belief that extending forgiveness is simply a favour for the other party, but it is really a favour for yourself. Conflict can be quite detrimental to your wellbeing. It can cause an abundance of health issues such as raising blood pressure, reducing the quality of your sleep, and even heighten your risk for a heart attack.

If you and a friend or family member have been at loggerheads for the past couple of months, why not bury the hatchet this Christmas season?

Forgiveness is what the holiday season is all about.

Forgiveness will not always be the easiest option, but it is the most mature. The lesson granted in forgiveness is not the reaction from the person being forgiven, but rather the change within yourself.

The Season of Forgiving

The list of people that you should forgive this Christmas is boundless – from a colleague that wronged you, to a sibling who used your personal belongings without your permission, and a companion who forgot your anniversary this year.

As we all know, Christmas is typically the time of year when gifts are given. However, not all gifts have to be physical in nature.

One of the greatest gifts that you can give another person is forgiveness. Arguably the most important person you should forgive this holiday season is yourself. Choosing to linger in guilt and shame for past mistakes is simply not the best for your mental health as it can quickly take a toll on how you view yourself and others. We can use our past failures as a chance to grow.

You may also want to consider forgiving your family members. They are human as well and, as a result, are not perfect. They may have hurt you in the past but holding on to that pain will simply cause a toxic relationship to form.

 Make that Choice Today

Deciding that you want to forgive someone for past issues can be a difficult choice to contemplate but deciding how to go about extending the olive branch can be even more difficult.

Luckily, we have a few ideas that you can use to make the situation much easier on both yourself and the other party. The easiest approach by far is to simply shoot over a quick text.

You should let them know why you are getting in touch with them and let them know your feelings regarding your past issues. On the other hand, the text could simply be a request for them to call you when they get a chance as you may find it easier to discuss the issue verbally.

Asking to meetup and discuss the problem is also an approach that you could take. This enables you both to be able to see the others body language and ensure that the message of forgiveness is adequately conveyed.

Bonus: Bring them a Gift

Taking that first step might not be so easy. The other party might have their reservations. When you bring along a gift, however, your recipient might be more willing to hear you out.

If you are looking for a gift to kickstart the restarting of kinship or friendship, try getting them a bouquet from a local florist! Bouquets can be used to convey different messages. Luckily for you, we have handpicked 2 distinct bouquets that represent forgiveness.
